Social scientists from Berkeley who study Middle America have long debated the relative importance of Middle America’s basic intelligence (“after all an unusual number of them go to church”) in the decision of which political party to support.
Many university political scientists lean toward the view that most intelligent people will vote for Democrats, given their superior understanding of the issues and exposure to professors at Ivy League schools.
In an ingenious study published in June, a Columbia University economist and an University of California at Berkeley professor argued that intelligence plays a powerful role. The two scholars studied a number of obvious political issues such as Health Care Reform and Global Warming.
In a situation in which every issue had an obviously correct answer, individuals from New York City or San Francisco picked the right answer 80% of the time. However, individuals located in non-coastal states picked the right political answer only 40% of the time. In fact, the farther inland you went, the worst the answers became with such states as Oklahoma correct a record low 25% of the time.
Some of the most shocking revelations were:
- 65% of Middle America believe private companies could provide better health care than the government
- 70% of Middle America were unsure about global warming
- 60% of Middle America believe that the world is a better place without Saddam Hussein
The study was commissioned as part of the Stimulus Package passed last year. This was the first study in a string of studies about Middle America. Berkeley plans on releasing a study tentatively titled “Is Middle America Racist or Just Stupid?” this summer.

I want to see the questions. The facts posted here don’t show me that middle-Americans are dumb, just maybe misinformed. This seems like typical left-wing, Ivy league thinking to me. If they aren’t like us, if they have different opinions, they must be dumb.
BTW, I live in Seattle. Probably one of those places like San Francisco or New York full of smart people…too bad California isn’t smart enough to dig itself out of the debt, overpopulation, and polution problems it faces.

Unfortunately, these poor middle americans refuse to let those with clearly superior intelligence help them.
I guess this is a lesson of you can bring a horse to the water, but you can’t make them drink.

Are you guys ‘word removed by admin’ retarded? Because they disagree with you, they’re obviously wrong? You do realize that more and more proof is being generated that global warming is not man-made. The Earth’s temperatures have been fluctuating for 4.5billion years, but its mankind’s fault?
And because I don’t want my hard-earned money going to taxes to cover medical expenses for lazy, out of work, degenerates who use the ER as a general practitioner doesn’t mean I’m stupid. It means I don’t want you namby-pamby little pussy socialist ‘word removed by admin’ stealing all my money to protect people who fall under Darwin’s Law

Very good article. It does make me determined to avoid Middle America and its populace as much as possible so that my clearly superior Democratic coastal intelligence is not contaminated by contact with Middle Americans
Funny! BTW – where does Sarah fit in this scenario since she comes from a coastal place but has the thought processes of a Middle American?

Really?
You peeps must surely understand that this article is fiction, right? An elaborate ruse?
As for little Brandon up there: Where will you be when Darwin’s Law comes calling, I wonder? Methinks a few more years on this planet will humble you to the point of groveling, as life always has a way of doing.
